Challenge
Integrating TytoCare's medical device into Amwell’s platform required bridging two distinct systems while maintaining a seamless user experience. The TytoCare UI lacked clarity, leaving users confused about setup and pairing processes. Additional challenges included Wi-Fi limitations (2.5GHz vs. 5GHz), technical constraints with audio testing during video calls, and navigating usability testing remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Results
The integration successfully streamlined the setup and in-visit use of TytoCare’s device within Amwell’s platform. Intuitive, step-by-step instructions and device visuals reduced user errors and improved comprehension. By embedding the pairing process within the intake flow, setup efficiency increased. Providers benefited from seamless iframe integration into Amwell’s Bento Box framework, while QA testing confirmed usability and syncing success. View final design here.

Process
Collaboration with PMs, developers, stakeholders, TytoCare’s team, and architecture teams ensured technical and UX alignment. Usability studies identified pain points in the existing setup, prompting a redesigned pairing process placed during the intake flow. Step-by-step guides and device visuals were introduced for clarity. Integration relied on Amwell’s Bento Box framework, followed by QA testing to refine syncing and usability.
Learnings
This project emphasized the importance of clear, user-focused instructions and visuals, especially for introducing new hardware in healthcare settings. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams was key to overcoming technical and usability challenges. Remote testing during the pandemic required adaptability, while iterative design ensured the final solution reduced patient confusion and met user needs.
